Premarital Therapy in San Diego
Emotionally Focused Therapy for couples preparing for marriage and the life they’re building together.
You don’t have to be struggling to benefit from couples therapy. In fact, the time before marriage can be a meaningful opportunity to slow down and get curious about the relationship you’re building together.
Premarital therapy creates space for conversations that can be easy to overlook in everyday life; how you navigate differences, what happens when you disagree, how you each experience closeness, and what you need from one another when life gets difficult.
“Learn to reach for the people you love. Nothing grows people like love. When we are loved, we blossom. Survival of the fittest had it all wrong- it’s really survival of the most nurtured.
”
It’s also a chance to talk openly about the things that will become part of your shared life: family, finances, intimacy, expectations, careers, children, boundaries, traditions, and the inevitable changes neither of you can predict yet.
More Than Preparing for Marriage
My approach to premarital therapy is grounded in Emotionally Focused Therapy (EFT). Rather than giving you a checklist of conversations to complete or teaching you rules for “good communication,” we pay attention to the relationship itself.
We’ll explore how you reach for one another, where you already feel secure, what happens when you miss each other, and how you find your way back after moments of disconnection.
The goal isn’t to prepare you for a perfect marriage. It’s to know each other more deeply and strengthen your ability to face what comes next as a team.
Strengthening What You Already Have
Premarital therapy isn’t only about identifying potential problems. It can also help you understand and strengthen what is already working well between you.
Using Emotionally Focused Therapy (EFT), we’ll explore how you stay connected when differences arise, how you respond to one another in moments of stress, and what helps each of you feel understood, supported, and secure in the relationship.
What We Can Explore Together:
“Exclusivity, engagement, and ultimately marriage don’t create commitment; they reflect it, because a promise or pledge means nothing unless you feel your partner’s commitment to you.”
